Summary The Loft 2014

Five married guys secretly share a penthouse loft in the city where they can carry out hidden affairs. But the fantasy becomes a nightmare, when they discover the dead body of a woman in the loft one of the group must be involved.

The architect Vincent Stevens; the psychiatrist Chris Vanowen; the real estate agents Luke Seacord and Marty Landry; and Chris' half-brother Philip Trauner are married and best friends. Vincent has designed a brand new building and proposes that he and his friends share one of the wonderful penthouse lofts. This would allow them to hook up with other women without worrying about hotel charges showing up on their credit cards. When they discover the body of a beautiful woman cuffed on the bed in the loft, they argue over whom is responsible and secrets are disclosed affecting their friendship.

Belgian director Erik van Looy revisits his own 2008 psychological thriller in this remake starring Karl Urban and James Marsden. The story centers on five married friends who begin to suspect one another of murder after the corpse of a young woman appears in the shared inner-city loft they use for extramarital affairs and other nefarious purposes..

Synopsis The Loft 2014

In a police station's interrogation room, a man is under investigation for murder, and he is interrogated by a male and a female detective. Mr. Vincent Stevens (Karl Urban) tells his version of a series of events. A flashbacks starts to the day before, beginning with a sex scene between him and a blonde woman, intertwined with a man named Luke (Wentworth Miller) arriving at a loft in NYC in the morning. He enters and drops his bags as he sees a woman lying dead, face down on the bed, covered in blood due to a cut wrist. In the interrogation room, Vincent tells the police that his wife was out of town skiing with the kids and Luke called him and told him to hurry up to get to the loft.

Cut to the loft the day before, when Vincent enters, seeing Luke and then the body. Vincent and Luke talk, saying the windows were sealed, the door was locked and the alarm was turned off, which means someone had to have gotten in with one of their keys, since only five exist and they can't be copied.

Back in interrogation, Vincent is denying ever having been to the loft, though the police already know that he and four other men share it to have sex with their mistresses, one of them being Luke.

Back at the loft, Chris (James Marsden) now enters. Marty (Eric Stonestreet) then comes in. No one can believe this is happening. They turn the body but don't know who she is.

Cut to a flashback further back in time: a party of the opening of a building, with the five friends, Vincent, Marty, Chris, Philip and Luke talking about the women there, ignoring their wives. Vincent, Luke and Marty are all architects, and it is Vincent's project they are celebrating. Chris starts talking to a beautiful blonde woman named Ann Morris. Chris is a psychiatrist and had treated her sister, who apparently had a mood disorder and later committed suicide. Chris apologizes for his failure in treating the sister, but she shrugs it off, saying that half her family suffers from mood disorders, and some people are simply born unhappy. Chris' wife Allison witnesses their interaction and is not happy. Vincent brings his friends upstairs to a loft and tells them his plan to share it for their secret rendezvous.

Loft: Luke starts to freak out as they try to get in contact with the fifth man, Phil. There's a Latin message on the bed: 'Fatum Nos Iungebit' is written on the wall in blood. There is a suicide note, saying "See you in another life".

In the interrogation room, Chris explains that the Latin phrase means "Fate Will Unite Us". However, he tells the interrogators that one word tense was incorrect (it should have been 'iunget' instead of 'iungebit'). They start asking him where Phillip, his half-brother, is, but he doesn't know. Chris and Philip have the same mother but different fathers, with Philip's father being an abusive alcoholic, and Philip being tossed around in foster care.

Back at the loft, Phillip finally shows up. The other men accuse him of committing the crime, but no one will admit to anything.

Flashback to Phillip's wedding months ago, to a woman named Vicky Fry. The men are talking crudely again about the women being present, until they notice that local politician Joel Kotkin has also been invited. Kotkin is a friend of Philip's father-in-law, Hiram Fry, owner of a large construction company. As a result, Kotkin makes sure that all the lucrative construction deals go to Hiram. As a wedding present, Vincent offers Philip the key, and to the other three men as well. Accepting the key means agreeing to certain rules, such as notifying the others by text when the loft is going to be reserved, and not going to the loft when it's occupied. Chris doesn't want the key - he says he is not like that, much to Vincent's derision. Marty's a tad nervous since their wives are right there, but they continue on to talk about the women at the wedding anyway. Marty notices Philip's beautiful sister (and Chris' half-sister) Zoe, and makes some crude comments about her. This causes Philip to threaten Marty - "never say that about my sister". Chris sees Ann again (as Kotlin's invited guest), and goes to talk to her privately. He comes on to her and asks Vincent to borrow his key...just that once.

Loft: they need to make sure none of them lost their key. They all have theirs except Chris, who just says it's not on him, but he hasn't lost it.

Flashback: Chris is having a dinner party for the guys and their wives. He seems to be going through a rough patch with his wife Allison. Around the table, Marty's wife Mimi is talking about her boss' wife who caught him cheating, and then they discuss plastic surgery. This leads to a discussion which escalates when Marty, who is drunk, starts making nasty comments to Chris' wife. Then he starts talking about how the boss should've gotten away with it, hinting about using a secret loft. Chris kicks Marty's chair causing him to fall over and stop talking, but the women are thinking now about what is going on.

Luke and his wife Ellie catch Phillip in the bathroom doing cocaine. She questions Luke about him maybe wanting someone else, as he gives her a shot of insulin for her diabetes. She implies that she would not mind if he gets his sexual satisfaction somewhere else, but he reassures her that it is not necessary.

Loft: the men are trying to figure out what to do and how to get the body out - she's handcuffed to the bed.

Flashback to Chris and Ann having sex in the loft. He tells her he loves her and he is going to leave his wife, which is very upsetting to her. She tells him she's a prostitute but won't bill him for the last few months.

Interrogation: Marty is being questioned by the cops. He and his wife are going through a trial separation because she caught him cheating with someone he met in San Diego on business. Flashback to the business trip - Vincent, Marty and Luke meet a lady called Dana in a bar. She's not thin so Marty wants to turn her away, but Vincent assures him that big women always have a cute friend, so he buys her a drink. They notice Phillip's father-in-law Hiram Fry, with another woman (clearly cheating on his wife). Ann Morris is also there with Hiram's friend Joel Kotkin. Fry recognizes the men from his daughter's wedding, and pays for their drinks in an implied attempt to buy their silence about seeing him with another woman. He directly talks to Vincent about working on a potential design project for his firm, saying something to them in Latin about being discrete.

Back at home, Chris is trying to call Ann and is caught by his wife Allison who accuses him of "something".

At the bar, Vincent and Marty are talking to Dana when her beautiful blonde girlfriend named Sarah shows up. In the interrogation room, Vincent tells the cops that this was the first time he met her. The four of them go up to the roof where there is a pool, also with Luke. Marty and Dana leave when Dana starts to feel nauseous from all the drinks. Vincent strips naked on a dare by Sarah, who pushes him into the pool. Then she starts to unzip her dress, revealing her ass to Luke. After Sarah is fully nude she talks seductively with Vincent in the pool that leads to sexual intercourse while Luke is watching them. Luke gets up and walks away and finds Marty having sex with Dana from behind.

Flash-forward to several months later, where Vincent and Sarah seem to have been having a long time affair. She doesn't want to say goodbye as she is in love with him, but he wants to break it off.

Back at the loft, Vincent is about to tell the guys that he was there the day before, when the phone/buzzer rings. It's a lady who wants to come up because someone has listed the loft up for sale, and she has an appointment with a woman named 'Sarah'. Vincent tells Luke and Marty that it is Sarah who is lying on the bed, and they both know her. Marty doesn't remember her since he was drunk. They run out to the balcony to see if they recognize the lady calling (they don't) and then confront Vincent. He tells them he was there the night before, and broke up with her, but had nothing to do with the murder. In anger, Chris throws his glass against the wall.

Flashback - on the street Chris follows Ann into a store and confronts her. She tells him that she was paid for having sex with him, but not anymore. He doesn't care that she's a prostitute, he loves her and wants only her. She doesn't believe him, saying that he has probably taken lot of women back to the loft. He gives her his key as a token of his commitment; from now on, she can decide when they use the loft. She leaves and gets into the car with Joey Kotlin, which makes him think he's been paying her to sleep with him.

In interrogation, Luke admits that he has met Sarah, the deceased woman. They ask him if he's jealous of her, implying that he's gay and has feelings for Vincent. Luke vehemently denies this. The cops tell him that Vincent is selling them out.

Flashback - Marty shows up at the loft one night and bangs on the door, crying to Vincent that Dana told his wife everything and she's leaving him. He asks Vincent to help him. Vincent promises him to go to Mimi and tell her that Marty loves her, and that Dana is lying.

Loft: Chris gives Vincent a drink. Phillip picks up the knife that was left on the bed and threatens Vincent with it, accusing him of killing Sarah. The other men subdue him and the knife winds up in Vincent's hands. Vincent and Chris turn it around, saying that Philip himself would be a more obvious suspect.

Flashback to Phillip in the loft with a prostitute, who is handcuffed to the bed. She is crying and shows marks of abuse, while Philip is high on cocaine. Chris and Vincent show up and Phillip starts ranting that the prostitute overcharged him, waving with a knife. The lady tells them that he forced her to do sexual stuff against her will, but Philip simply remarks that "you can't rape a prostitute". Chris violently attacks his half-brother, saying that he is no better than his own alcoholic and abusive father. Philip then starts yelling that while Chris grew up in a comfortable life and was enjoying his college years, he and Zoe, their sister, had to endure endless physical abuse by their father, while their mother silently allowed it. Chris tells him that he never had any idea in what kind of misery his half-brother and -sister were, and if he had, he would have tried everything to get them out of it. Chris tries to pay the prostitute off to convince her not to go to the cops, but she leaves saying no. Chris tells Philip that he will never forgive him for this.

This story is new to Marty and Luke. Luke then speaks up and admits that he had been recording all their encounters. He shows them a secret camera, and an area where he can look at the footage recorded on CD's. He is then accused of being a pervert (getting off while watching them) but he's never used the loft to cheat on his wife. He didn't record Vincent and Sarah last night however, because Vincent didn't tell them he was coming. He's very scared now because everything he's done has been documented, and he is afraid that someone else now knows of what they are doing. This might be the same person who put up the loft for sale. Luke asks them what he thinks will happen if everyone finds out the truth, very threatening. Could one of their wives suspect anything?

Flashback to a fundraiser which took place the night before. Vincent is telling his wife he can't go on a ski trip due to his work. Allison is accusing Chris nonstop - he asks her if she's the one seeing someone else. Vincent still hasn't heard anything from Hiram about the project he was offered. He walks up to Hiram, Joel Kotkin and their wives, and inquires about the status of the project he was promised. When Hiram can't give any guarantees, Chris hints at the meeting in the bar in San Diego to put pressure on Hiram. Marty's wife Mimi unexpectedly shows up at the fundraiser; he desperately wants her back, but she comments about his cheating, and implies that maybe she already slept with someone else too. Phillip is distressed because his sister Zoe is there, and he finds her attire too revealing. He talks about it with his wife Vicky, but Vicky isn't interested in his concerns. She is apparently aware of his frequent adultery with prostitutes, and his drug use (admitting to occasionally stealing from his cocaine stash), and tells him to get lost. Ann is there, and she texts Chris to follow her to the bathroom. There, Joel Kotkin approaches Chris, warning him that his friend Vincent is playing with fire and should be held back. They discuss Ann, but Kotkin says he does not owe her, and that Ann is free to sleep with whoever she wants. Chris asks if he was the one who paid her for sex, but Kotkin denies, saying that Ann was paid only the first time, and not by him.

Phillip goes to get Zoe, but gets into a brutal fistfight with a guy who is with her. Hiram tells Phillip he never wants to see him again and to stay away from his daughter. Zoe cries to Vincent, who comforts her, but then sees Sarah. He tells Sarah that she's just his friend's sister. He tells Sarah he loves her but it's not that simple. He tells her to meet him in the loft, but Sarah tells him she can help him make the choice. She walks towards a group of women that includes Vincent's wife, but but Luke bumps into her and tells her not to do it, "you'll regret it." All the women start looking at them.

Cut to the loft. Vincent starts feeling drowsy and falls to the floor. It is revealed that the drink he got from Chris was drugged, and that the men have set a trap for him.

Flashback to that morning: Luke calls the others minus Vincent over after finding Sarah on the bed, having killed herself with pills. Luke then shows them all the videos he had made to prove that Vincent has been double-crossing his friends for months. There is footage of Vincent sleeping with Sarah, Ann, Marty's wife Mimi, and Phillip's sister Zoe. The time he slept with Mimi was the night after Marty begged him to go talk to her, after getting her drunk (that's what she was implying to him at the fundraiser). He starting sleeping with Zoe right after Philip's wedding, and he was her first. After noticing that Chris was interested in Ann, he paid her once to seduce Chris into sex, so that he would share the loft with them and be an accomplice in their adultery.

After learning this, all four men agree to frame Vincent for her suicide, as long as he admits that he was there last night. Chris will break a glass to signal that they can set him up. They have two hours to work it out and set up alibis. Phillip, with images of him and his sister flashing through his head, snorts cocaine and then slits Sarah's wrist and cuts her open, using the blood to write the Latin phrase, because the suicide note says they will be united in another life, and he handcuffs her to the bed.

Back at the loft, they continue to force pills and alcohol down Vincent's throat. They toss him naked on the bed and handcuff him and Sarah together.

In the interrogation room, Vincent is telling the cops the full story of how his friends tried to frame him for the girl's suicide and subsequent mutilation, but they have nothing because they got rid of all the evidence that they were even there. Everyone has an alibi for that morning, and Hiram Fry has even made one up for Phillip, to punish Vincent for trying to blackmail him about his own affair. The detectives only have a suicide note, pills, and a knife with his fingerprints on it. He tries to convince them to keep questioning the other four, hoping one will break.

The female interrogator lets Chris go, but stops to ask him why Vincent would be accusing them all if he is guilty. She asks him if he thinks they are trying to hide something else - her murder. Chris says he thought it was suicide, but tests have indicated that the wrist wasn't cut by her, and the sleeping pills hadn't killed her. Plus there was no suicide note. This disturbs Chris because he had it in his jacket pocket.

Chris is at the loft, and Luke shows up. Chris asks Luke when he stole the suicide note from his pocket. Chris found out that Luke was the one who put the loft up for sale. When someone called to the loft, Luke must have used the confusion to steal the note out of Chris' pocket. Chris found the note in the dumpster - it was in Luke's handwriting.

Luke admits that he was in love with Sarah the whole time since they met in San Diego, but Vincent was always in between them. He ran after her when she left the fundraiser and asked her to give him a chance, but she told him she felt nothing for him now - maybe in another life. His wife witnessed this confrontation.

After the fundraiser, Luke thought he'd find Vincent at the loft with Sarah, since his wife Barbara was skiing. After Vincent left, he went in and drugged Sarah with pills. He then injected her with his wife's insulin, which should have led to a quick and painless death that could not be detected. He said he did it out of love. However, Chris reveals that neither the pills nor the insulin killed her; she died only when Phillip cut her.

Chris tells Luke that Vincent is being charged with murder, but Luke reminds him that it was his brother that killed her. Luke goes after Chris with a knife and gets out onto the balcony. He tells Chris to jump so that he won't have to kill him. Chris tells them that he already called the cops and told them everything as they hear sirens. Chris gains control, the knife is dropped, and Luke is holding Chris over the edge, strangling him. He gets up and grabs the knife. Luke tells Chris to tell Ellie and the kids that he's sorry and then falls backwards off the balcony landing on a car below, dead from the fall.

Flashforward six months - Marty is back with his wife Mimi, who has forgiven him. Phillip is awaiting trial and Vincent is living in the loft, the only thing his ex-wife allowed him to keep after their divorce. Chris has also divorced and is expecting to have the kids next weekend. Ann approaches Chris and they appear to have a fresh start together.

Summary I Origins 2014

A molecular biologist and his laboratory partner uncover evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it.

I Origins begins when graduate student, Ian Gray, is researching the evolution of human eyes with Karen and Kenny, in order to prove that eyes have evolved instead of "appeared" as creationists claim. His fascination with eyes takes him into areas that have profound personal and cultural consequences.

Synopsis I Origins 2014

A young scientist and his lab partner set out to dis/prove, once and for all, the origins of mankind by studying eyes and the chromosome for sight in various species. Over several years they collect data that they feel ends up proving Evolution is the correct theory, and gain some notoriety. After their son is born and his eyes are mapped, another person's name comes up in the database as the person those eyes belong to. Another doctor calls and hints that their son has some autism markers and needs to be tested, but all they do is show the baby pictures and try to map which picture his eyes are drawn to and what his reactions are.

This confuses the parents and they begin their own investigation. They start by visiting the person whose eyes match their son's, and they find the person died shortly before their son's conception. They also find that the people in that person's life were in the pictures shown by the other doctor to their baby. As they delve further into the mystery, they start to see data that challenges the known fact that everyone's eyes are unique. They stumble onto a match for the father's ex-girlfriend - a young girl born shortly after his girlfriend's death, who is living in India.

He begins a search for the little girl and when he finds her, administers his own test of photographs. The girl's scores are consistent with random choice and he begins to feel foolish that he ever questioned his own previous research. Yet as they leave and head to the elevator, the little girl explodes into hysterics and does not want to enter the elevator. As he realizes the reason for her hysteria, his conclusions are once again challenged as he remembers his ex-girlfriend, the match to this little girl's eyes, died in an elevator accident.

Summary The Taking of Deborah Logan 2014

An elderly woman battling Alzheimer's disease agrees to let a film crew document her condition, but what they discover is something far more sinister going on.

What starts as a poignant medical documentary about Deborah Logan's descent into Alzheimer's disease and her daughter's struggles as caregiver degenerates into a maddening portrayal of dementia at its most frightening, as hair-raising events begin to plague the family and crew and an unspeakable malevolence threatens to tear the very fabric of sanity from them all.

What began as a touching documentary about how Deborah Logan began to develop Alzheimer's disease and her daughter fights for her, as a result turned into a nightmare. No one suspected that the disease Deborah is hiding behind is a far greater evil...

Synopsis The Taking of Deborah Logan 2014

Mia, Gavin, and Luis are a documentary team set to create a documentary about Deborah Logan, an elderly woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Deborah is reluctant to be filmed but agrees to the project after her daughter Sarah reminds her that they need the money to keep the house from being repossessed. While filming, Sarah and Deborah talk about earlier years when Deborah worked as a switchboard operator for her own answering service business to make ends meet.

Deborah is shown to exhibit increasingly bizarre actions that her personal physician, Dr. Nazir, states are normal for someone with an aggressive form of Alzheimer's. However, cameraman Luis begins to notice that several of Deborah's actions defy normal explanations and expresses concern that something supernatural is occurring. Things grow more tense after Luis and Gavin record audio of Deborah speaking in French while sitting at her old switchboard, talking about sacrifices and snakes. They also notice that the line for 337 continually rings and discover that the line belonged to local physician Henry Desjardins, who disappeared after a series of cannibalistic ritualized murders of four young girls. This information is too much for Gavin, so he quits. Deborah's behavior becomes so extreme that she is hospitalized for her own safety.

Mia and the others discover that Desjardins was supposedly trying to re-create an ancient demonic ritual that would make him immortal but required the deaths of five virgin girls that recently had their first period. They question whether Deborah is possessed by Desjardins as a similar case occurred in Africa where a mother was possessed by her dead son and was freed only when a witch doctor burned the son's corpse.

At the hospital, Harris visits Deborah, who begs Harris to kill her. He tries to comply with her wishes but is unsuccessful due to the entity within Deborah preventing it. Sarah, Mia, and Luis discover that Deborah had unsuccessfully tried to abduct Cara, a young cancer patient in whom she had previously tried to take. Sarah learns that years ago, Deborah had learned that Desjardins planned to use Sarah as his fifth victim and had murdered the doctor before he could accomplish this, and buried his body in the yard. The group eventually finds the body and tries to burn it but fails to do so.

Deborah succeeds in abducting Cara from the hospital and taking her to the location where Desjardins had killed all of his previous victims. After discovering Deborah has gone into the mines, Sheriff Tweed follows behind, only to be killed moments later. After hearing Tweed's attack Sarah and Mia follow behind, only to find Deborah just as she's trying to eat Cara's head in a snake-like manner. They finally manage to burn Desjardins' corpse.

The film then cuts to news footage of reporters stating that Deborah was deemed unfit to stand trial for the crimes she committed during her abduction of Cara. An additional news story shows that Cara has overcome her cancer and is celebrating her birthday. As the reporter begins to wrap up the story, Cara turns to the camera and gives a creepy smile... hinting that Desjardins' ritual was completed and that his evil soul is now in control of her body.

The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki arrests its driver, Alex Jones, but a lack of evidence forces his release. As the police pursue multiple leads and pressure mounts, knowing his child's life is at stake the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family?

When two girls go missing, the families call the police. The brother of one of the girls says that an RV was parked on the street. The police find the RV and the man inside is a mentally challenged man. The detective in charge questions him but says nothing. The father of one of the girls tells the detective to keep him locked up so they can work on him. But he says without more evidence they have to let him go. When the father learns of this he goes to confront the man and the man says something which makes the father think he knows something. So he grabs him and works on him to make him talk but he doesn't. The detective continues to try and find the girls.

On Thanksgiving, Keller Dover, his wife Grace, their teenage son Ralph and their little daughter Anna go to the home of their neighbors and friends Franklin Birch, his wife Nancy, their teenage daughter Eliza and their little daughter Joy to celebrate together in a lunch party. Anna and Joy want to play on the street and Ralph stays with them. The girls play in a ROV and Ralph brings them back home. Later Anna asks her father to go to their house with Joy to seek her emergency whistle and Keller tells her to call Ralph or Eliza to go with them. Later the families realize that the girls went alone and have vanished, and they call the police department. Detective Loki is assigned to the case and he arrests the teenager Alex Jones that drives the trailer. Soon they learn that Alex has the IQ of a ten year-old boy and he is discharged. When he is leaving the precinct with his aunt Holly Jones, Keller presses Alex and he says to Keller that "the girls have not cried when he left them". Keller asks to keep Alex imprisoned during the investigations, but Loki cannot hold him anymore. While Detective Loki investigates the pedophiles near the location, Keller decides to abduct Alex to torture him and find where his beloved daughter and her friend are, crossing the thin line between right and wrong.

In a town in northeastern Pennsylvania, Keller and Grace Dover, Franklin and Nancy Birch, and their respective offspring - each couple with a teenager and adolescent apiece - are best friends. While the two families are celebrating Thanksgiving together, the two adolescent girls, Anna Dover and Joy Birch, go missing. Based on events earlier in the day, the two families believe that the girls were abducted by whoever lives in the camper van parked in their neighborhood. Their beliefs are strengthened after they meet the resident of the camper, Alex Jones, a mentally childlike young man who is supported in every respect by his overprotective aunt, Holly Jones, and based on other subsequent evidence about Alex that emerges. However, Detective Loki, the lead police investigator, is pretty certain that Alex did not abduct the girls, he instead initially following leads of known sex offenders and pedophiles in the area. In addition, Loki has no evidence to hold Alex in custody, placing him at odds especially with Keller, who is certain that Alex is the one who abducted the girls. While Loki continues his investigation with Keller accusing him of not doing his job by following what he considers are pointless leads, Keller decides he has to take matters into his own hands. He has to decide how much he will involve Grace, Franklin and Nancy in getting Alex to divulge where the girls are by any means possible. His decisions as in who he will involve in getting Alex to talk may depend on how like-minded he believes the other three are, they who may be as devastated as he is, but who may neither be certain that Alex is the perpetrator or go to the same extremes as he to get the information from Alex.

Against the backdrop of what should have been a happy Thanksgiving dinner, a terrible case of a mysterious abduction unfolds, as Anna, the six-year-old daughter of the small-town carpenter, Keller Dover, and her best friend, Joy, vanish without a trace. As time is against the desperate father, the only lead points at troubled Alex Jones; however, due to lack of evidence, Detective Loki knows that the alleged prime suspect will soon be free. Now, the odds are against them, and Keller will have to take matters into his own hands, even if his reckless decision threatens to put his freedom at risk. Will he ever see the girls again, alive and in one piece?

Synopsis Prisoners 2013

Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) and his son Ralph are hunting deer; Ralph drops a buck as Keller recites the Lord's Prayer, then smiles approvingly at the teen. On the drive home, Keller tells his son to always "be ready."

An old RV drives past the Dover house. Later they talk about the family finances; Ralph wonders why they don't rent out the grandfather's old apartment, Keller says it is in too poor condition.

The family, Keller, his wife Grace, son and daughter walk to a neighbor's house for Thanksgiving dinner with their friends the Birches. The families have a good time together. While the adults cook the kids go out, Anna Dover jumps on the old RV parked by the curb; they realize someone is inside and return to the Birch house. Franklin Birch (Terrence Howard) is an affable man and plays a lousy trumpet. After dinner, the younger6-year old daughters leave to go back to Anna's house to get her safety whistle she is supposed to carry at all times.

Sometime later Keller realizes the girls haven't returned and that the teens hadn't escorted the two young ones. Keller searches his own home to no avail. Ralph returns from looking also and mentions the RV from earlier.

Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) has Chinese food alone and chats with the waitress. His phone buzzes.

After a police hunt, the white RV is found parked outside a gas station next to a wooded area. When Det. Loki, who heads the case, goes to confront the RV's driver, Alex Jones (Paul Dano), Alex panics, tries to speed away but crashes into the trees.

Alex is taken in for questioning, but it is found that he has the IQ of a 10-year-old and rarely speaks. Detective Loki goes to see Alex's aunt, Holly Jones (Melissa Leo), who raised him with his uncle after his parents died when he was six. Alex's uncle left home a couple of years ago after a domestic dispute with his aunt. Alex spends most nights sleeping in the RV and does not have many things. The RV shows no forensic evidence indicating the girls were forcibly taken into or struggled inside the RV, and Alex's low intelligence means he couldn't have covered up such evidence.

At night many volunteers search the woods calling for the girls. Loki comes to the Birch house and gets better photos of their daughter. At the Dovers, Loki tells Grace they passed the lie detector tests they did, he asks if there was a reason the girls ran away. Grace is weepy and says the girls were happy, Loki vows to find the girl. He greets Keller, who seems sure it must be the RV driver.

Loki tells the Dovers the evidence against Alex Jones is weak and tries to calm him down. The polygraph tests of him prove inconclusive due to his low IQ, and he repeatedly denies ever having seen the children. As the police are unable to find evidence against Alex, he will be released in two days. Loki asks his Capt to hold Alex longer, but the senior refuses. Loki updates him on the search.

Loki interviews sex offenders within a 10-mile radius of the girls' homes. Loki discovers that a Father Patrick Dunn has a bound and mummified body in a barricaded basement. The body is wearing a circular medallion with a maze-like design. Father Dunn claims that he did not know who the man was, but that in confession the man talked about killing sixteen children and also admitted to having a marital dispute. Father Dunn confesses that he convinced the man to come to his house, where he killed him "to save the children" and is arrested for murder.

The search of the woods and river continues. Keller has found out when Alex is being released and attacks him in the police parking lot. He hears Alex say "They didn't cry until I left them." Though no one is close enough to hear this to corroborate, Keller takes this as proof that Alex took the girls.

Captain O'Malley lets Dover off with a warning and sends him home after a brief talk with Loki.

At the Jones house, Loki interviews Alex and Holly again about the parking lot incident. He threatens to send the aunt to jail if Alex is not honest. He then leaves and stands in front of an old car.

Grace is distraught, Keller gives her a sedative to help her sleep. He tells his son to be brave and grownup and look after his mother, then leaves the house.

That night, Keller abducts Alex at gunpoint while walking his dog, and imprisons him in his father's old abandoned, run-down apartment house. The next morning He shows Franklin Birch, the captured man bound with duct tape; Birch is horrified as Keller starts questioning.

Detective Loki researches past unsolved missing children's cases. One is Barry Milland, a boy missing since age 6, 26 years ago. An interview with his mother shows her playing and replaying a VHS tape of him just before his abduction. He interviews Father Dunn again, in custody. Dunn says the man abducted kids in daylight and took more than one at a time. Loki feels the info is useless. The body is not identified by DNA or missing persons' reports.

Keller repeatedly beats Alex for information, enraged that the man won't say what he did with the girls.

During a candlelight vigil for the missing girls, Detective Loki notices a man acting suspicious but loses him in a chase.

That evening Birch watches the news item on TV about the man, they show a sketch and the next day he goes to see Dover and tell him there is another possible man.

Loki and his boss, Capt. O'Malley argues about resources for the continuing hunt.

Loki watches the video of Alex' interview; he gets a phone call tip. A discount store clerk recognizes him and states that he comes in from time to time to examine children's mannequins and buy children's clothing. She promises to contact Loki if he comes to the store again.

Franklin is overcome with guilt and tells his wife Nancy (Viola Davis) what they have done and brings her to see Keller. Dover brings her to the apartment where Alex is brutally beaten, bloody and tied to the bathroom floor. Shocked, she unties Alex and tries to talk to him nicely, but he attempts to escape. Dover grabs him. Tied again, Alex watches as Dover starts building something from plywood.

Later, Dover then brings the Birches back to the apartment. Keller has built an enclosure around the bathtub in which he nails Alex. It is devoid of light except for a small PVC tube talk-hole. Keller says otherwise he would kill the man, and challenges the Birches to let him go. Franklin says it has to stop but does nothing when Nancy tells him to think of Joy.

While the Birches teen daughter Eliza is in the bath, the strange man walks silently in their house. Later the hooded man enters the Dovers house, Grace hears something and jumps out of bed. She finds an open window and believes Anna had come back. Detective Loki arrives writes down her statement of someone coming in through the window. Grace shows him the basement, Kellers well-organized workshop. Loki sees a bag of lye and asks Grace where Keller is; she says he is out looking for their daughter.

In the pouring rain, Loki follows Dover but is "made," Dover turns back from the apartment and goes to a nearby liquor store instead.Loki wonders what he was doing in the area. Dover approaches with a bottle and asks why he is being followed. He says this is first drink in nine years. Loki urges Dover to take care of himself and his wife. It has been six days, Dover gets very angry, but then goes home to sleep. He dreams he sees Anna.

Loki works at his computer. He reads an old news archive of a suicide, which occurred at 234 Campobello, the same location Dover was near.

The next day Keller tortures Alex with alternating scalding and freezing water from the shower-head. Alex tries to talk, but Dover just wants to hear where the girls are. Dover kneels to pray. Loki arrives at the boarded-up building and enters the ground floor. He finds Dover pretending to sleep on the floor. Dover gives the policeman a short tour of the ramshackle building, and then his cell phone rings with the store clerk, the intruder has been spotted. The clerk tells Loki the license plate number, and he leaves quickly.

Loki confronts Taylor at his home, notices he is strange and forcibly handcuffs him. He calls it in and searches the house. The walls are covered in drawings of intricate mazes. In a back room, locked boxes are filled with maze books, venomous snakes, and bloody children's clothing. At the police station, both the Dovers and Birches identify clothing belonging to their children from the crates, and Taylor confesses to killing them.

Taylor is weeping while handcuffed in the interrogation room and draws a maze. Loki watches for a while then enters. He loses control and beats Taylor during questioning, and other cops rush in. Taylor manages to grab one of the officers' gun from his belt and commits suicide.

Back at the apartment prison Keller sits and recites the Lord's Prayer.

At the police station, the Captain chides Loki for the death.

Keller is drinking as Alex finally talks and mentions something about finding the girls in a maze.

Keller goes to the Jones home to "apologize" to Holly for attacking Alex at the police station. She invites him in and tells Dover her son died of cancer and commiserated. Keller says he dreams of Anna in a maze. Holly also mentions her husband kept snakes. A newspaper headline grabs Dover's attention, the report of Taylor's suicide.

Capt. O'Malley tries to tell Loki to get over it, you can't win them all and to find a girlfriend. Loki goes to his workstation in a rage. In a pile of photos, he notices a picture of a maze similar to the one Taylor was drawing. Back at Taylor's house, another cop reveals the blood on the children's clothes is later found to be pig's blood. Taylor is now felt to be a fake killer copying a book titled "The Invisible Man" which prominently features mazes, especially a circular maze (seen in the "O" in the "Prisoners" logo and as the maze medallion worn by the body in Father Dunn's basement) which Taylor was drawing while in custody. Loki can't figure out how Taylor had the missing girl's clothes.

He returns to the Dover's house and finds a small sock in the bushes. Someone calls Grace, and she excitedly finds Keller.

Joy Birch has been found wandering, drugged and is hospitalized. Keller tries to question the young girl. Anna remains missing. In her drugged state, Joy rambles that Keller was there, giving the people around her the impression that Keller is somehow in on it. Keller rushes off as Loki chases him in the hospital, then to a car chase outside. Loki loses Keller, but heads towards Keller's apartment building and discovers the imprisoned Alex.

Keller has gone to Holly's, with a tool belt and offering to do some penance for his behavior. Holly once again is friendly and invites him in for a tea. Keller confronts her about the girls, but the woman holds him at gunpoint and forces him to put on handcuffs and consume the same sedative used to drug Anna and Joy. At gunpoint, she directs him to an old car outside. She reveals that she and her husband had been religious people, like Keller, until their son died of cancer at a young age. Holly and her husband decided to make war on God by making children disappear without a trace to turn their parents into demons, as evidenced by what Keller had become. Her husband then disappeared and she "does what she can." She orders Keller to drive slowly and tells him Alex never touched the girls. The car had been covering a pit, Holly tries to force him in and shoots him in the leg, he drops into the hole. She closes the lid and parks the car again over the lid.

The Capt. tells Loki to go to Holly's and let her know about Alex.

With a small flashlight, Keller explores his dungeon. He finds his daughter's whistle and prays for Anna's safety.

Loki arrives. Holly goes to a locked room to get Anna. Loki enters the house and sees an old photo of Holly's husband and the RV. He then creeps toward a noise. Holly is injecting the girl with a syringe, and Loki demands she stop, they both fire their weapons. Holly is killed, and a wounded, bloody Loki races the girl to the hospital.

The next morning a bandaged Loki reads a newspaper, the headline says Barry Milland, aka Alex Jones, has been reunited with his family. Grace comes in and says Anna will be okay, the Birches and Dovers leave. Grace says Keller still hasn't contacted her; she realizes Keller will be going to jail when caught.

At night, at the Jones house, the CSI techs say they have found some dead snakes, but the ground is frozen. They leave for the night. Loki stays behind for a while then hears a whistle.
