Summary Annie 2014

A foster kid, who lives with her mean foster mom, sees her life change when business tycoon and New York City mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.

The 1977 Broadway musical returns to the big screen with this Overbrook Entertainment/Sony Pictures production surrounding a 10-year-old Harlem foster child (played by Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhané Wallis) taken in by a calculating billionaire (Jamie Foxx) who's campaigning to be mayor. Abandoned by her biological parents as a baby, Annie (Wallis) spends every moment of every day attempting to avoid the wrath of her cruel foster mother Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). Thing start to look up for Annie, however, when she has a very public encounter with Will Stacks (Foxx), a local cell-phone mogul with mayoral ambitions. Stacks campaign isn't going too well until he meets Annie and invites her into his home at the suggestion of his trusted top assistant Grace (Rose Byrne) and his ambitious PR advisor Guy (Bobby Cannavale). Meanwhile, what was originally conceived as a PR stunt to win over skeptical voters becomes something much more personal when the jaded tycoon realizes his little friend is much more than a mere good-luck charm..

Annie is a young, happy foster kid who's also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they'd be back for her someday, it's been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. But everything's about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks - advised by his brilliant VP, Grace and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy - makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he's her guardian angel, but Annie's self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it's the other way around.

In this modern remake of the classic Broadway show ANNIE, the character "Annie" is portrayed as this beautiful little 10 - 12 year old girl hopelessly lost within the NYC foster care child program, yet smart, tough and bright enough to survive the fast-paced New York City streets. Forced to stay with her mean foster mom, Miss Hannigan, Annie somehow manages to tough-it-out in Harlem until one day she accidentally and literally runs into the wealthy billionaire and NYC Mayoral candidate, Will Stacks. Saving her from almost being hit by a car (while simultaneously being video taped by an unknown passerby) Stacks and his political team decide to use the life-saving incident to boost his polls for the upcoming NYC election. Taking Annie into his penthouse home, Stacks begins to fall "head-over-heels" for the adorable little Annie. Meanwhile Annie only has one hope and that is for her parents to someday come back and rescue her from the foster care program.

Synopsis Annie 2014

In this version of the popular Broadway musical, updated from the Great Depression of the early 1930s to contemporary 2014 New York City, a class of young orphan children are doing presentations on former presidents. Up next is 10-year-old Annie Bennett (Quvenzhane Wallis). She decides to do her report on Franklin Delano Roosevelt as a performance piece, and she gets her classmates to join her in stomping their feet and making noises as part of the bit.

Annie runs to a restaurant in the city where she waits for her parents to show up and finally reclaim her. They never come. The restaurant owner gives her cannolis to take home. Annie also stops by a convenience store and gets flowers from the manager Lou (David Zayas) to give to his "lady". Annie gets back to the foster home where she lives and climbs up the fire escape to rejoin her foster sisters: Isabella (Eden Duncan-Smith), Tessie (Zoe Margaret Coletti), Mia (Nicolette Pierini), and Pepper (Amanda Troya). They're looked over by the abrasive and mean Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz), who used to be a Broadway performer and is now miserable in her new job of having to take care of the girls. The girls lament not being adopted ("Maybe").

Hannigan wakes the girls up early on Saturday to make them clean the place up as an inspector from Social Services is set to arrive. (They sing "It's The Hard Knock Life" as they do their chores.) The inspector (Mike Birbiglia) comes over, and Hannigan flirts with him. After he leaves the room, the girls notice that he dropped a document containing their records. Annie takes it and seizes the opportunity to seek out her real parents. She makes an excuse with Hannigan to go out and do something while she goes on her mission. Annie stops by Lou's to do some work to get the money needed to get the documents.

Meanwhile, we are introduced to Mr. Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx), a cell phone mogul and local New York City billionaire who is running for mayor of New York City. With him is his hotshot adviser Guy (Bobby Cannavale), his assistant Grace (Rose Byrne), and bodyguard Nash (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje). Will is a germaphobe and also not very popular with voters compared to the current favorite Harold Gray (Peter Van Wagner). Will goes to feed the homeless and tries to eat the mashed potatoes to show how much he cares, only for him to spit it out in the face of a homeless man... three times.

Annie is unable to learn anything about her parents since she's not in the system. (She walks home singing "Tomorrow".) After the song, she sees two boys chasing a dog and throwing things at it. Annie chases after them and yells at them to stop. At the same time, Will is walking down the street. Annie accidentally bumps into him and falls into the street. Will grabs her and pulls her up right before a van drives by.

A video of Will's heroic act hits the web, and he moves up several points in the race. Guy suggests to him that he find Annie and use her to make himself look good for the public. Will sends Grace to the foster home to find Annie. She takes her back to Will's place, where, on the way, she sees the video of her rescue.

Annie meets Will again, and he offers her to stay there for a bit. She knows there's a catch, and he admits the plan. She jokes that he could be president if she moved in. The adults get somebody to approve the temporary guardianship for Will. Annie then takes a tour around the place and is impressed with everything ("I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here").

Will sets the plan in motion by taking Annie out to do whatever she wants. They adopt the dog from the streets (to Will's dismay), and Annie names it Sandy. He later takes Annie and the foster girls to the premiere of a cheesy movie (with cameos from Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, and Rihanna), and then to buy a bunch of things for the girls. The girls are taken back to the foster home, and Hannigan orders them to take back all the nice things they got (they don't). Defeated, Hannigan goes to her room and once again bemoans her current position in life ("Little Girls").

Gray gets endorsed by Michael J. Fox, leading Will to get a bit desperate. He decides to take Annie on a ride over the city in his private helicopter ("The City's Yours"). Annie is pleased.

Annie joins Will and company at an event. Will invites Annie up on stage for the people to see her in her pretty red dress. (She starts to sing "Opportunity", and the orchestra joins in.) After the performance, Guy tells Annie to read a speech that he wrote up. Annie is quiet and leaves the stage upset. Will and Grace run after her, and Annie admits that she doesn't know how to read. Will says he will get her a tutor.

After talking to Will, Guy devises a plan to get Annie's real parents... or rather, people to pretend to be her parents to get her off Will's hands. Guy teams up with Hannigan to set their scheme in motion ("Easy Street"), because, if Will looks heroic and reunites Annie with her parents, Guy gets a nice payday to look forward to. Hannigan later auditions a bunch of (horrible) actors to play the part, and she is not pleased with any of them.

Will tucks Annie into bed. Grace realizes that Will has grown to care for her. She tells him his secret is safe with her.

Will later asks Grace what it would take to properly adopt Annie. That's when Guy comes in and says that Annie's real parents have been found. Annie is happy, though Will is visibly sad. Annie is taken to the restaurant where she's always waited for her parents to meet two fake parents (Tracie Thoms and Dorian Missick). They appear to have the other half of the locket around Annie's neck to confirm it. After they take Annie with them, Hannigan passes by the restaurant and decides she's unhappy with Guy over the decision to let Annie go off with two strangers. She, Will, and Annie all seem to feel a certain inner conflict right about now ("Who Am I?"). Hannigan then approaches the foster girls and asks for their help.

Annie leaves Will's home to go with the fake parents. Hannigan arrives too late with the girls and Lou to tell Will and Grace that those aren't Annie's real parents and that Guy set it up. Will has his people call the police and be on the lookout for Annie and the car that she's in. They run off to save her, but not before Grace punches Guy in the face.

Annie asks the fake parents where they're going, and they respond rudely and indifferently. They make her think that Will knowingly dumped her on them, and Annie quickly realizes they aren't her real parents.

She starts to call out for help to anybody that sees her. The kids that see her take pictures of her and post them to Instagram and Twitter. This lets Annie's foster sisters to get a hold on her current location. They go with the adults in Will's chopper before spotting them over the George Washington Bridge. The police are also hot on their trail. The fake dad drives through the park before Will's pilot lands the chopper in front of them. The fake parents try and make a run for it, but the police tackle them to the ground.

Will goes to Annie, who is mad since she thinks he abandoned her. Will apologizes and admits he didn't know that those people were imposters. The press arrives on the scene. To prove he really cares, Will officially withdraws from the mayoral race and decides to focus on raising Annie. Annie forgives him, but she decides one more thing needs to happen. She sets brings Grace toward Will, and he decides to formally ask her out to dinner. She responds by kissing him. The three of them then sing "I Don't Need Anything But You."

Will sets up a literacy center in the city, with Annie finally being able to read a speech. The film concludes with the whole cast singing a reprise of "Tomorrow".

However, he finds little sympathy from his family and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him, his mom, dad, brother and sister - who all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

For 12 year old Alexander Cooper, everyday is a bad day. And his family thinks he's being silly because they never have a bad day. On the day before his 12th birthday party, he learns that another boy is having a party of his own and everyone is going to it. And another kid punks him online. So at midnight of his birthday, he wishes that his whole family can have a bad day. And things for the whole family go bad, his mom's car is broken so they have to share a car, his sister has a cold and has to go on stage, his older brother, who's hoping to get his driver's license and to bring his girlfriend to the prom, has to deal with his girlfriend's snootiness and fails to get his license, his mom has a crisis at work which could cost her her job, and his dad who has a job interview has to bring his younger brother with him but because his pacifier is broken he can't stop crying. Alex feels responsible.

The day before Alexander's birthday, things don't go his way. His family always seem to have things go their way and since they don't believe in bad days, he recieves no support from them. At 12:01 on his birthday, he wishes for his family to feel and know what a bad day is like.

Alexander always has bad days and his family always has good days, but one day he secretly wishes his family knew what it was like to be him. When he wishes that, everything in his family changes, like his sister gets sick and his dad spills orange juice.

The film follows the exploits of Alexander Cooper (Ed Oxenbould), an ordinary 12-year-old boy, and his "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day." He is left out by his family; his older brother, Anthony (Dylan Minnette), his older sister, Emily (Kerris Dorsey), his mother, Kelly (Jennifer Garner), his father, Ben (Steve Carell), and his baby brother, Trevor (Elise/Zoey Vargas), living in the Los Angeles metropolitan area of California. Anthony is trying to earn his driver's license so he can drive his bitter girlfriend, Celia, to the prom; Emily is rehearsing for the title role in her school play; Kelly is working for a publication company that is publishing a new children's book which will promote her to vice president of the company; and Ben, who has been unemployed for seven months, has landed a job interview as a game designer for a video game company. That same morning, Alexander attends school where he experiences another series of mishaps, such as accidentally setting fire to his crush, Becky Gibson's, notebook as well as finding out that his friends, including Becky, and even his best friend, Paul, will all be attending the birthday party of Philip Parker (Lincoln Melcher) instead of his, due to Philip's expensive party entertainment and popularity. That night, Alexander puts a candle on a sundae and wishes that everyone in his family would experience what he is going through..

Today, of all days, Alexander Cooper is having the worst day in his life, on the eve of his twelfth birthday celebration. As everything seems to go from bad to worse, an inadvertent curse upon his family to make them see what it is like to have a genuinely bad day will lead to a catastrophic twenty-four-hour nightmare, where no Cooper is safe from humiliation, disappointment or property damage. When will this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day end?

Synopsis Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day 2014

The Cooper family is driving home in their busted minivan. Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) says that they are not having a good day. His baby brother Trevor (Elise and Zoey Vargas) has his face covered in green marker. His older brother Anthony (Dylan Minnette) is wearing an odd blue tuxedo. His parents, Ben and Kelly (Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner), try to stay positive. Alexander claims this is mostly his fault. As soon as the family gets to their house, his sister Emily (Kerris Dorsey) gets out of the car and pukes. They open the door of the house and see something that frightens them, making them scream and slam the door.

One day earlier.

Alexander wakes up to an invitation to a birthday party for Philip Parker (Lincoln Melcher), the most popular kid at his junior high school. This party also happens to be the next day, which is when Alexander is having his birthday. When he gets to the bathroom and finds gum stuck in his hair. He cuts the chunk of it out. Since his parents are super busy, Alexander has to carpool with his crush, Becky Gibson (Sidney Fullmer) and her family. He walks to the car and trips on the sprinklers, landing face-first on the grass in front of Becky. On the ride to school, Becky's brother Elliot (Reese Hartwig) takes a picture of Alexander and uses an app to put his face on the bodies of women in bikinis.

Kelly works at a publishing company where they are set to release a new children's book on potty training. Her boss Nina (Megan Mullally) tells Kelly if this book takes off, Kelly will be promoted to Vice President.

Anthony gets to school to meet with his girlfriend Celia (Bella Thorne), whom he says is the hottest girl in school. Celia grills Anthony for not sounding flirty in his texts to her (ie, ending them with "xoxo"). She wants to go to prom in a limo, but Anthony offers to drive her after he passes his driver's test. Celia isn't thrilled with that idea.

Alexander walks to class with his best friend Paul (Mekai Curtis). They see that Elliot mass-texted everyone in school all the photo-shopped pictures of Alexander, and everybody laughs at him once they see him. Philip comments, "Nice boobs." Paul also mentions that he's going to Philip's birthday party, despite the fact that Philip's birthday is a week later. In class, the teacher is ready to assign the students an assignment on different places around the world, and Alexander requests Australia due to his fascination with the place. The teacher grabs a globe and spins it to pick what the students will learn, and he makes Alexander do research on Djibouti while Philip gets Australia. Later, Alexander has science class and partners up with Becky. He tries inviting her to his birthday party, but she is already going to Philip's. When he's not paying attention, he accidentally lights Becky's notebook on fire with the Bunsen burner, and then sets the periodic table of elements chart on fire. The teacher puts the fire out with an extinguisher, and the whole class sells Alexander out. As he ends the day, another teacher asks him to take home the class gerbil.

At home, Trevor drops his favorite bumblebee pacifier. Ben asks Alexander to wash it, but he ends up dropping it in the garbage disposal. He goes to grab something to pick it out, but Ben turns it on and destroys the pacifier, leaving Trevor to stay crying.

During dinner, the family lists off their good news. Kelly mentions her possible promotion. Ben scored an interview with a video game designing company. Emily is going to be the lead in her school's production of Peter Pan. Anthony is excited to take Celia to prom and to pass his driver's test. Alexander mentions all the awful things that happened to him that day, but Trevor starts crying, so his parents divert their attention to him, while Emily retreats to the car to rehearse.

Before going to bed, Alexander tells Anthony that he thinks nobody understands him. It sounds like Anthony is sympathizing with him and showing him love, until he makes a comment on "that cute little butt", and we see he is talking on the phone with Celia. Anthony berates Alexander out loud, making Celia think he's talking to her, and she angrily hangs up. At midnight, Alexander goes the the kitchen and makes himself a birthday sundae with a candle in it. He talks to the gerbil and says that he wishes his family could understand how he feels and what it's like to have "a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day". He blows out the candle.

The next morning, Alexander wakes up before his family. Ben and Kelly spring out of bed, as Kelly realizes she is running late. Emily has tissues all over her bed, having gotten a cold overnight. Anthony discovers a huge zit on his forehead. Kelly rushes everybody out of the house since her car is dead after Emily left the light on and killed the battery.

After getting the kids to school, Kelly runs into work to learn that there was a misprint in the book that replaced the word "jump" with "dump" on not just the cover, but every page inside. To make things worse, she remembers that there is a celebrity reading at the nearby book store. She borrows a co-worker's bike and gets there with helmet hair. The celebrity is Dick Van Dyke. Kelly misses the chance to warn Dick about the mistake, and he ends up reading the book that makes it sound like the book is all about taking a DUMP.

Anthony catches up with Celia, who is still mad at him and breaks up with him. He later gets her out of class to beg her forgiveness and for her to still go to prom with him. She accepts. Anthony gets so excited that he jumps up and hits a banner, which pulls down two trophy cases, breaking both of them. He gets suspended.

Ben has to take Trevor with him to the job interview. He meets the interviewers Greg (Donald Glover), Logan (Joel Johnstone), and Joaquin (Ben Greene). Although he is significantly older than these people, the three of them like what they saw with Ben's past work experience. Trevor keeps bumping around the walls, so Ben brings him closer. Trevor grabs a green marker and rubs it all over his face and mouth.

Alexander, meanwhile, is having a significantly better day. Paul tells him that Philip's party is canceled because Philip came down with the chicken pox, so now everybody can go to Alexander's birthday. Also, Elliot got in trouble for the mass texts. Alexander finds Becky and invites her again to his party. She gives him a "maybe".

Ben picks his kids up and goes to the pharmacy to get medicine for Emily, who is congested but still needs to be back at school for the dress rehearsal for the show. Kelly meets up with them after escaping the angry parents and Dick Van Dyke.

The family takes Anthony to his driver's test. He gets stuck with Miss Suggs (Jennifer Coolidge). On the road, she critiques him for driving ten miles below the speed limit. He gets a phone call from Celia, but knows he shouldn't answer. Suggs implies that he should take the call since Celia probably wants to talk prom. Anthony answers the phone, and Suggs yells at him to put the phone away. This distracts him, and Anthony almost collides into a car. Panicked, he swerves into multiple parking meters, severely damaging the car. Suggs fails him, and as Anthony opens the door, a car drives by and breaks it off. This brings everybody to argue about their problems, with Anthony and Emily blaming Alexander for what happened with them, and their parents arguing back, until Alexander tells them to stop and admits that he made the wish for them to see what it's like to have a rotten day like he usually does. Ben tells them not to let this keep them down, and they head off to their next destination.

The first stop is to a tuxedo shop for Anthony, but the tuxedo he ordered was mistakenly given to someone else. He is given the blue tuxedo. The Coopers then get to school for Emily's show, but she is "drunk" off too much cough syrup. The show goes on, and Emily makes her entrance as Peter Pan too early. She giggles and flies around the stage with her harness, clumsily bumping into the set pieces until the kid playing Captain Hook brings her down. She gets on her feet and throws glitter into the audience. Backstage, Ben tries to comfort Emily after that debacle. She pukes on him. He then gets a phone call to meet up with Greg and his friends at a hibachi restaurant. Alexander gives him a pirate's blouse to change into.

On the way to the hibachi restaurant, the Coopers pick Celia up for prom. She is none too pleased to be riding in a wrecked minivan that smells like vomit, or that they're going to a hibachi restaurant. When they get there, Anthony and Celia sit apart from the family. Their school friends come over, also ready for prom. One of them asks Celia if they love the place, and she lies that she does. Ben finds Greg and his friends at their table, and they are amused by him wearing the pirate's blouse. He sits with them and has sake bombs. The chef also flings shrimp into Ben's mouth, to the amusement of the other patrons. Then Ben's sleeves catch fire, forcing him to stick his arms in the fish tank. Embarrassed, he walks outside and kicks some garbage cans. The family rejoins him, and Alexander tells him that even though he is trying to be positive, everybody is gonna have bad days and that they must appreciate the good days. Anthony then ditches Celia to be with his family after she makes a rude comment on his family being crazy. He then gives Alexander a birthday punch.

The Coopers make it home to find an alligator in their house. This is part of an Australian petting zoo that Ben and Kelly planned for Alexander's birthday. He is thrilled, but the people setting up the pens say that a kangaroo got out. They manage to get the alligator in the pool, however. The kangaroo passes by, and Ben runs after it. He finds it in a neighbor's yard, and the kangaroo kicks him. They manage to bring it back, though.

All of Alexander's friends turn up for his birthday, including Becky. She says the party is pretty awesome. Ben and Kelly both get phone calls. Ben gets the job and Kelly is told that Dick Van Dyke's reading of the book went viral, and that the book is already selling fast. They look outside and see that their kids are enjoying themselves. They bring out a cake for Alexander. He makes a wish that there be more days like this one (which the rest of the family say "NO!!!!!"). Alexander closes the film by saying that for a pretty bad day, this one turned out to be the best day ever.
